Tips for Cleaning Seatbelt Buckles and Plastic Components


It is a fact that the webbing of car seatbelts gets the most dirt due to constant touching and to eating and drinking in the vehicle. However, the buckles and plastic components can sustain heavy dirt marks which are challenging to remove as well. Use some practical cleaning advice which will help you to keep them in perfect condition.

Buckle Cleaning

Seatbelt buckles are made from steel and have chromium plating. This makes them strong and durable. Still, this does not mean that they will never get dirty.

You should use a specially made chrome cleaner to remove the dirt from them. Follow the instructions for use carefully. It is best to use soft microfiber cloth for applying the cleaner. Rub the buckles gently and ensure and you clean even the areas which are more challenging to reach.

Even though the buckles are generally resistant to corrosion, you should inspect them for rust just to be on the safe side. If there is any, you need to use steel wool to remove it. Usually, there is no need for using commercial solvent. Apple cider vinegar should do a good job.

You can readily polish the buckles with a product which is especially designed for the purpose. It is best if you use a polishing tool, but simple lint-free cloth will do a good job as well.

Plastic Component Cleaning

For this, you will need sandpaper which can be used wet. Preferably, it should have 2000 grit. You need to prepare a solution with a tablespoon of liquid soap and two glasses of cool water and let the sandpaper soak in it overnight.

After the sandpaper is ready, you should use it for removing dirt from the surface of the plastic components of the seatbelts. You should rub them gently. You will see the dirt going away with the soapy water. You should use a damp cloth to remove any remaining traces of soap and dirt after the cleaning.

You can readily polish the plastic components as well. For this, you need to use plastic polish which is readily available in stores. You just need to ensure that you will not apply too much of it.

Finally, it pays off to inspect the seatbelt buckles and plastic components for signs of wear and tear and damage while doing the cleaning. In this way, you will be able to have them replaced timely. This is crucial for the safety of everyone travelling in the car.
