How to know Best Times to Buy A New Car

How does one go about stacking the car buying deck? It all starts with choosing the right time to buy. Good deals can happen anytime, but the odds will dramatically tip in your favor if you follow these general guidelines.

Avoid shopping in spring

Warmer weather and big tax refunds have people flocking to dealerships every spring, eager to spend some cash on a new car. Some dealers even offer special tax refund services, but with such a supply of shoppers ready to buy, don't expect dealers to move much on price. If you can be patient for a few months, you're almost certain to score a better deal on the exact same ride.

End of the month is usually (but not always) better than the beginning

Waiting until the end of the month can often work to your benefit since most dealers receive some type of monthly bonus from manufacturers if certain sales metrics are met. The same can also be said for the end of a three-month quarter, where manufacturers might also get into the game with special incentives of their own. There are a few snags to this rule however, the most obvious being the dealer having already met their sales quota, which pretty much makes this tip null and void. Also, shoppers have caught onto this trick and as a result, dealers might be less willing to negotiate knowing there are other buyers on the way.

End of the calendar year is a buyer's bonanza

The end of the year creates a perfect storm of awesomeness for car buyers, with the most obvious reasons plastered all over television, magazines and the internet-manufacturer incentives. The best manufacturer incentives for new car leases and purchases usually come in the month of December, as manufacturers work hard to boost calendar-year sales. Likewise, dealerships also want to boost their calendar year-sales in addition to clearing out old inventory and hitting sales quotas, so the ante is upped further still. In short, everyone wants to sell before the end of the year, and they're willing to cut some great deals to do it.

Late summer/early fall can deliver some surprising deals

The end of the year is often considered the best time to buy, but many experts point to August and September as the primo shopping period for new cars. That's because manufacturers begin shipping new model-year vehicles to dealers around this time, and dealers get very anxious about moving their existing inventory. It's harder to sell a "new" car when it's technically last year's model, and the longer those prior-year models sit on the lot, the harder they are to sell. Manufacturers sometimes throw in some good rebates and incentives to help dealers move these machines, creating a very lucrative buyers market for sharp car shoppers.
